Practical Tips
- Get a T-money card for all public transport
- Download Naver Map – Google Maps has limited detail in Korea
- Tipping is not expected
- Convenience stores are excellent for quick meals
- Wi-Fi is free almost everywhere, including public transport
Common Scams & Practical Risks
- Itaewon bar overcharging: Some bars in Itaewon's nightlife area present inflated bills, particularly late at night. Check prices before ordering and keep track of your tab. Stick to well-reviewed establishments.
- Fake K-pop merchandise: Street vendors near Myeongdong and Hongdae sell counterfeit K-pop merchandise at inflated prices. Buy official merchandise from authorized stores or the artists' official online shops.
- Taxi long-routing: Rare but some taxi drivers take longer routes from airports. Use the excellent airport express train (AREX) instead – it is faster and much cheaper. If using a taxi, follow along on Naver Map.
- Street vendor overcharging: Some street food vendors in tourist areas (Myeongdong, Namsan) charge higher prices for foreigners. Check posted prices and compare with nearby stalls. Most vendors are honest.
Solo & Women’s Safety
Solo Travellers
South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world for solo travelers. You can walk anywhere at any hour with virtually no safety concerns. The ultra-efficient public transport system makes solo navigation effortless – the Seoul metro alone covers most tourist sites. Korean culture caters well to solo diners with 'honbap' (eating alone) being completely normal, and many restaurants have solo seating. Convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) are everywhere and serve excellent hot meals. The language barrier can be challenging outside Seoul, but the T-money card, Naver Map app, and Papago translation app solve most practical issues. Solo female travelers will find South Korea extremely safe – it is one of the best countries in Asia for women traveling alone.
Women’s Safety Very Safe
South Korea is very safe for women travelers. Violent crime against foreigners is extremely rare, and it is safe to walk alone at night in most areas. Hidden camera ('molka') crime has been a domestic concern, but this primarily affects Korean women and public restrooms. Female travelers should exercise standard precautions in nightlife areas (Itaewon, Hongdae). Women-only accommodation and transport options are available.
LGBTQ+ Travellers
| Legal status | Legal, no recognition |
|---|---|
| Social climate |
Legal but no recognition; military still criminalises within ranks. Seoul has Itaewon scene; PDA discreet. Chaebol/conservative-Christian pressure significant.
Drug Laws
| Severity | Severe (long sentences) |
|---|---|
| Cannabis | Illegal |
Cannabis use anywhere worldwide is prosecutable for Korean nationals on return. Tourists face up to 5yrs for possession. Strict urine testing in some clubs reported.
Emergency Numbers
If you decide to travel to South Korea
A practical checklist that applies to any trip. Each item links to the part of this guide where the specifics live.
-
1Check the live advisory Read the UK FCDO and US State Department pages within a week of departure. Advisories change. View current FCDO advisory →
-
2Register your trip US citizens: enrol with STEP. UK citizens: register your itinerary with the nearest British embassy. Both enable consular contact in an emergency.
-
3Save the local emergency numbers Police: 112. Ambulance: 119. Pin them in your phone's emergency-contacts screen so they're reachable from a locked phone.
-
4Insurance with medical evacuation Travel insurance with a medical-evacuation limit of £10m or more. Cheap policies usually exclude or cap medevac, the single most expensive thing that goes wrong abroad. See the medevac entry in the glossary for what to check.
-
5Confirm vaccinations and prescriptions Visit a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before departure for any routine vaccinations and country-specific recommendations. Check any prescription medication against the destination's import rules.
-
6Set up a check-in routine before you go Agree a daily or every-other-day check-in time with a contact at home, plus a fallback channel if your primary one fails (WhatsApp goes down in countries that block it). The family communication plan covers the specifics.

Medical evacuation cost (pre-insurance)
South Korea sits in Band A on Warnely's medevac cost dataset. The figures below are typical pre-insurance ranges in USD, calibrated against published bands from Global Rescue, MedJet, Allianz, and insurance-industry whitepapers.
Local hospitals at this level are internationally competitive. Most cases never need international repatriation; commercial-class medical escort home is enough if it does.
For the full methodology, the four-band table, and the downloadable CSV, see /methodology/medevac. Sanity-check your travel insurance limit against the high end of this band before booking.
